SWAN LAKE (AUG 30 – SEP 8, 2019)

Ballet Philippines opens its 50^th Season with one of the most iconic classical ballets, Swan Lake. With music by Pyotr Illyich Tchaikovsky, this ballet masterpiece has been a staple in the company’s repertoire since 1978. International and local dance stars have graced the sacred stage of the CCP Main Theater to essay roles in Ballet Philippines’ Swan Lake.

In celebrating 50 stellar years, Ballet Philippines mounts a performance of Swan Lake with new sets by Toto Sicangco, featuring Elena Evseeva and Andrey Ermakov, stars from the Mariinsky Theater (Kirov Ballet) in two evening performances, as well as exceptional homegrown talents. Here is one show that will set the bar high for dance this ballet season.

MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAM (OCT 11 – 13, 2019)

The genius of William Shakespeare inspires Carlo Pacis’ magical and reimagined interpretation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This neo-classical spin on the classic tale breathes life to the enchanting story about young lovers, fairies, sprites and their many twists and turns under the light of the moon.

CINDERELLA (DEC 6 – 15, 2019)

To celebrate the holidays, Ballet Philippines is mounting the timeless tale of Cinderella as choreographed by National Artist for Dance Alice Reyes. The musical score by Pyotr Illyich Tchaikovsky, which was specially arranged by Francisco Feliciano, will transport audiences to an enchanting universe. The design vision of National Artist Salvador Bernal adds dimensions to this world where pumpkins turn into exquisite carriages and glass slippers find their way back to its rightful princess. Holidays at the theater make for unforgettable experiences especially when its with Ballet Philippines.

ITIM ASU AND OTHER DANCES (FEB 21 – 23, 2020)

Ballet Philippines showcases its diverse and dynamic repertoire as well as the strength of its company in the different dance styles. With over 500 choreographic gems to choose from, this production will continue the retrospective story of the company’s journey to becoming the forefront of innovation, and artistic excellence in Philippine Dance. At the core of the production the company restages a modern classic, Itim Asu. Based on three ritual scenes from Virginia Moreno’s award winning drama The Onyx Wolf, the 1970 landmark production once again returns to the CCP Main Theater Stage.

RAMA, HARI (MAR 20 – 29, 2020)

Ending the 50^th Season with a high note, Ballet Philippines brings back to the stage the dance-musical extravaganza that is Rama, Hari. The collective product of four National Artists, Bienvenido Lumbera for the Libretto, Salvador Bernal for the Production Design, Ryan Cayabyab for the Music, and Alice Reyes for choreography, Rama, Hari is a celebration of undeniable Filipino talents in dance, song, and story-telling.

Innovation sets Ballet Philippines apart. Since its founding in 1969, it has championed the creation of original, distinctly Filipino masterpieces. One of company’s most celebrated pieces from its vast repertoire is Philippine contemporary rock opera ballet, Tales of the Manuvu.

Philippines’ Best Rock Out To Tell The Creation Story

Choreographed by National Artist for Dance and Ballet Philippines’ Artistic Director Alice Reyes in 1977, Tales of the Manuvu tells the creation story of the Manobo tribe from Mindano. The libretto, written by National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera, was based off an article published in Philippine Heritage by E. Arsenio Manuel. Dero Pedero created the score, working alongside rock band The Afterbirth to compose a musical that would redefine dance and Filipino artistry. Beloved late Philippine couturier Ernest Santiago also joined this most formidable group of artists in brining flair to costumes for Tales of the Manuvu. Lighting and set designs were imagined by CCP Veteran, Monino Duque.

This unique adaptation of the creation story was the most monumental coup of Ballet Philippines in the 70s. Not only did it bring together rock, opera, pop and ballet on the stage, it also brought audiences from all walks of life to one main theater in a collective celebration of Philippine culture. Alice Reyes recalls, “We opened to a packed house and we never looked back. People sat on both aisled of the theater night after night with long lines outside.”

New Sets and Musical Arrangements

Broadway theater designer and multi awarded filmmaker Loy Arcenas is lending his genius this season to the creation of the mystical Manobo realm. Known for his ground-breaking film Ang Larawan, Arcenas has also reaped praise for the sets he created in Broadway’s Once On This Island. Arcenas’ sets will be lit by Katsch Catoy, whose light design mastery continues to add magic to the stage.

Original music and score, which makes Tales of the Manuvu a masterpiece that mirrors the country’s rich pool of talent, will likewise refreshed with new arrangements by Francis de Veyra.

A Powerhouse Cast, Then and Now

When Tales of the Manuvu premiered, celebrated singers like Celeste Legaspi, Hadji Alejandro, Anthony Castelo and Boy Camara were cast. Leah Navarro also made her debut performance during Tales of the Manuvu. Joining them were Rey Paguio and the UP Concert Chorus.

This year, Celeste reunites with Ballet Philippines to once again lend her powerful vocals to the musical. Also returning to stage for this year’s revival are Boy Camara and Ding Mercado. Joining these musical legends are multi-awarded performers Shiela Valderama, Lorenz Martinez, Nar Cabico, Reuben Laurente, Poppert Bernadas and Lara Maigue. Straight from her Miss Saigon tour in Irelend, Aicelle Santos is will also be joining in this grand revival of Tales of the Manuvu by Ballet Philippines.

Since it opened its 49^th Season, the country’s premiere dance company, Ballet Philippines, has been elevating the experience of dance. From the time audiences enter the CCP’s Main Lobby up to the moment they take their seats inside the theater, and even as they leave the premises, Ballet Philippines has been making ballet weekends an experience not to be missed.

A POWER HOUSE CAST

This month, the company is bringing back a timeless classic: Romeo and Juliet. Choreographed by National Artist for Dance and Ballet Philippines Artistic Director, Alice Reyes, this full-length ballet will feature the powerful music of Prokofiev. Dancing the lead role of Romeo on special evenings is internationally celebrated danseur, Joseph Gatti. He joins BP Principal Dancer Denise Parungao who will play Juliet. The Manila Symphonic Orchestra joins the pair, making it a complete feast for the senses. Just as powerful, are the performances of lead dancers Ronelson Yadao and Monica Gana as well as Victor Manguad and Jemima Reyes. Alice Reyes shares, “It has been such a heady experience for us all at rehearsals—each pair with their own dynamic interpretation and dramatic portrayals of the roles of the two lovers.”

BERNAL’S BELOVED VERONA REVITALIZED

Grand sets by National Artist Salvador Bernal—perhaps the most opulent ever to be mounted on the sacred stage of the CCP—were revitalized with the help of Mr. Andy Locsin just for this performance. His father, National Artist for Architecture Leandro Locsin was a staunch supporter of the company. He also particularly loved Ballet Philippines’ Romeo and Juliet when it first premiered on stage. As tribute to his father, Andy Locsin thought to extend his most generous support to the revitalization of Bernal’s grand sets.

BUBBLY, ROSES AND PORTRAITS AT THE THEATER

To set the mood for an evening of romance, Ballet Philippines and Fifi L’Amour will be serving rose bubbly pre show at the lobby of the CCP Main Theater. Roses in full bloom from Island Rose will also be given out to audiences! And while many will enjoy taking selfies and other snapshots for the Gram in front of a stunning floral photo wall, you will want to arrive extra early to get your portraits done to immortalized this very special night. Everyone during performance nights of Ballet Philippines’ Romeo and Juliet will truly feel the love!

Fresh from the success of the 49th Season opening production, Carmina Burana,  Ballet Philippines is once again set to heat up the CCP Main Theater Stage this October with The Innovators: Carmen and Other Dances.

Continuing the retrospective on the company’s rich history and dynamic repertoire, this production will feature the country’s most innovative choreographers: Denisa Reyes, Augustus “Bam” Damian III, and Alden Lugnasin. Each have made their mark in Philippine Dance with choreographic gems that showcase unique styles in movement, story-telling, and artistry. Each of these brilliant dance makers will present two definitive masterworks that pay homage to Ballet Philippines’ unparalleled repertoire and rich history.

Denisa Reyes, will present Love Lies Bleeding, a raw and emotional look into the temperaments that best describe love and relationships, and Te Deum, a window into the Filipino socio-political consciousness of the 80’s, mirroring the emotional state of the Filipino citizens of today. Both pieces showcases Denisa’s Truthful and Fearless take on choreography.

Augustus “Bam” Damian III, will showcase the power and precision of the company’s dancers in After Whom, contrasting with his sensual and fresh take on one of the most beloved classical pieces of music, Goerges Bizet’s Carmen.

Alden Lugnasin’s Swimming The Ilog Pasig, a piece inspired by the campaign to clean up the Pasig River,and This is my Life, a solo piece highlighting the independence and elegance of a woman,also takes center stage as a showcase of Alden’s unique choreographic vocabulary.

I danced it some 30 years ago when the ballet premiered in Manila in 1974. For the first time in my life, I saw the piece in its entirety. It was exhilarating to sit in the audience and mentally dance the movements embedded in the crevices of my whole being.

As the curtains went up, a breathtaking and awesome sight greeted the audience. Rose of choral singers in black robes and yamuikes flanked the stage as guest conductor Eugene Castillo raised his baton. The stage revealed towering rock formations with the ballet dancers in formation, veiled in smoke emerging from a central cauldron… When the music began as the singers hit the first note and the dancers executed their first gesture, you could actually hear gasps from the audiences. I was absolutely enthralled. It was a powerful moment that showed how such enduring yet fleeting beauty could be created within the confines of a stage.

The ABS CBN Philharmonic Orchestra accompanies the piece with a hauntingly beautiful rendition of Carl Orff’s masterpiece under the baton of maestro Gerard Salonga. Ethereal and powerful vocals by the Madrigal Singers bring to life religious satire, sentiments of joy and drunken elation shared among poets of medieval Europe. These live musical performances by both the Philharmonic Orchestra and the Madrigal Singers add layers and depth to Reyes’ rich choreography. National Artist Salvador Bernal’s production design creates a majestic landscape of rock formations on stage that transports one to another time, space and universe.

The program will also feature pieces that highlight the history of Ballet Philippines. It will include Brando Miranda’s rendition of Vivaldi Concerto—vigorous, lively and spirited. Vivaldi was first premiered in 1983 and returns on stage after 35 years this season. Norman Walker’s Seasons of Flight, will also take center stage. It tells the tale of human relationships—its dynamics, idiosyncrasies and complexities—through graceful avian movement and migratory patterns. Debuted by Ballet Philippines in 1972, it was the first of five pieces created by Norman Walker for the company. “What I am trying to do is to present to our new audiences some of our iconic pieces that have not been done for so long… reflecting the company’s tapestry of dance gems,” shares Alice Reyes.

In celebrating the bright future of dance, Ballet Philippines is also staging an exciting new piece by the company’s young and talented choreographer Ronelson Yadao, It was during the 48^th season when Yadao decided to return to the company after dancing with Cloud Gate Theater in Taiwan. As he stays on for another milestone year, the talented choreographers of the company will premiere more pieces that will add to Ballet Philippine’s unparalleled repertoire.
